I am back in Juneau and couldn’t resist taking advantage of the rare sunny day and going whale watching!

This is Flame, a ~45 year old female humpback whale that returns to Juneau every summer. She’s usually accompanied by a calf, many of which bear similar names to their mother (i.e Spark and Lumen). I’ve been told one of her calves was even born during the summer months here in Alaska, an extreme rarity.

She did not have a calf this year but she still diligently returned to Juneau. Flame is a local favorite due to how predictable she is. She always shows her flukes and has an unusual habit of raising her flukes extremely high out of the water, a bit like a sperm whale.
