It’s the #twelvedaysofwhalemas Day One: #didyouknow that whale flukes contain no bones? They are different between all species but in some, flukes are so distinctive that researchers use them like fingerprints to identify individuals.⠀⠀

It’s #FunFactFriday #Didyouknow that Pacific White Side Dolphins are widely considered to be one of the most acrobatic species in the world? They are lively and quick and can leap three times their body length out of the water! We know they lived close to the shores of BC over 2000 years ago thanks to artifacts that were discovered in first nation middens but for unknown reasons disappeared along our shores and have only reappeared in the last 30 years. Read all of our “Lag” stories on our website (under the Dolphin category)⠀⠀

It’s #FunFactFriday! #Didyouknow that of the three Killer Whale ecotypes you can find in British Columbia Offshores are the most mysterious and the least studied?! While there is still so much to learn about these animals what we have learned is fascinating! They travel in extremely large groups (sometime of over 50 or 100 individuals) and one of their major sources of food seems to be sharks! ⠀

It’s #FunFactFriday! #DYK that Narwhals were once thought to be the “missing link” to the mythical unicorn?! Research has now shown us that the long “tusk” of this Arctic whale is in fact a tooth that protrudes from inside their mouth out through their upper lip. What exactly this tooth is used for is still a subject of study but narwhals have been seen using their teeth to break up small amounts of ice and will sometime “fence” with each other, perhaps in competition for a mate.⠀⠀
