It’s #FunFactFriday! #Didyouknow that the Ganges River Dolphin is one of two subspecies of South Asian River Dolphin, the other being the Indus River dolphin? Ganges River dolphins are found in the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers through Bangladesh, India and Nepal. Like all river dolphins they have a very long and thin rostrum but unique among cetaceans these river dolphins swim primarily on their sides. ⠀⠀

It’s #FunFactFriday! Did you know Vaquita’s, named ‘little cow’ in Spanish, are the smallest species of porpoise and also the only one to live in warm water? They are found exclusively in the Gulf of California where they hunt for small fish and squid in shallow lagoons. Like most porpoises, Vaquita’s are solitary, rarely seen in groups unless it is a mother and her calf, and they also tend to shy away from boats #whaletales #ISTVD #vaquita #seacow #talesofsavingwhales #porpoise #porpoisesareawesome #didyouknow #trivia #dyk #funfacts #savethevaquita

It’s #FunFactFriday and #OrcaAwarenessMonth! Did you know Orcas can be found in and around every island in the Galapagos year round but they are very unpredictable? They are always seen in small groups, never larger than 10 individuals, and frequently spotted alone. They seem to be generalist hunters, preying on anything from sea lions to turtles to rays to fish. Research on this population began in the 1990s and a photo identification catalogue has recently seen started to help better understand this mysterious population.⠀

It’s #FunFactFriday! #Didyouknow that the Sei whale is named after the Norwegian word for pollock because both the whales and the fish were frequently seen off the coast of Norway at the same time?! Like many other cetaceans Sei whales migrate from warmer temperate waters in winter to cooler subpolar waters in summer but unlike most species these migrations do not yet appear to be geographically predictable. ⠀

It’s #FunFactFriday! #DYK that Harbour Porpoises have Megatestes?! That’s right, male Harbour Porpoise testes can swell to 4% of their body mass. The idea is to produce so much sperm that other males’ competing sperm is flooded out or just outnumbered in the female’s reproductive tract. If humans employed the same mating strategy, human testes would be 1.25 kg each (compared to the 17-27 g they are now). That’s at least 46 x bigger. #whaletales #porpoise #didyouknow #trivia #fff #porpoiseareawesome #harbourporpoise #porpoiseofinstagram #getonaboat #exploreBC #salishsea#porpoisewatching #howesound #yvr⠀

It’s #FunFactFriday! Did you know that Minke Whales are the smallest of the baleen whales, and are in fact smaller than some toothed whales?! Though size can be hard to judge on the water they are easily distinguished from other whales by the white “mittens” or patterns they have on their pectoral flippers. Sometimes called “stinky Minke” these whales do have a powerful blow for their size and the smell does carry well over the water.⠀⠀

It’s #FunFactFriday! Did you know that it is thought that Bowhead Whales are the oldest lived mammals on Earth, reaching up to 200 years in age?! This extended life span may be influenced by the cold waters where they live!⠀⠀

It’s #FunFactFriday! #Didyouknow that Bryde’s Whales were named after the 19th Century Norwegian whaler, John Bryde (pronounced “BROO-dus”)? Bryde’s whales are found in warm seas around the world, growing to 55 feet long and 90,000 pounds as they filter out plankton, crustaceans, and small fish using their large baleen plates.⠀

It’s #FunFactFriday! #DYK that Right Whales were given that name because they were the “right” whales to hunt? With their slow speed, proximity to shore, and large amount of blubber which kept their bodies afloat after death. With an estimated population of less than 400 individuals the North Atlantic Right Whale is extremely vulnerable to numerous physical and environmental threats including ship strikes, noise pollution, oil spills, climate change and other impacts on prey distribution, and entanglement in fishing gear.⠀
