It’s #FunFactFriday! Grey Whales are returning to the Salish Sea! #Didyouknow they can be easily mistaken for logs in poor visibility as they are usually not particularly active at the surface? Underwater is another story though as these gentle giants can navigate with amazing accuracy into quite shallow waters where they scrape and filter mussels and clams out of the sandy bottom.⠀

It’s #FunFactFriday! #DYK that Burmeister’s Porpoises live in the shallow, coastal waters along Eastern, Southern, and Western South America?! Despite living close to shore there is much we don’t know about this species as they are almost impossible to see except in the calmest water. As a result, their population numbers have not been appropriately estimated but we do know they are a frequent casualty of bycatch and in Chile the are directly caught and used as crab bait. Visit @porpoisedotorg to find out more about how you can help these rare animals. #whaletales #talesofsavingwhales #porpoisesareawesome #funfact #burmeister #porpoise #trivia #didyouknow #storytelling

As mentioned in the latest episode of the #whaletalespodcast, Fin whales are one of the few vertebrates that are asymmetrically colored The right side of their mouth (including their baleen!) is a white/yellow colouration while the left side is a dark colour. The variations of color on the right side are one of the ways individual fin whales are identified!⠀

It’s Fun Fact Friday! Did you know that the Finless Porpoise is found in the coastal waters of the China Sea, particularly around the Korean Peninsula, as well as in the mouth of the Yangtze River? They are the only porpoise species without a true dorsal fin, possessing instead a long dorsal ridge. This, coupled with their light greet coloration gives them a baby beluga-like appearance.
